My wife (English) and I (German) got married in a registrars office in Germany according to German law. We did have a church ceremony 6 months later in the UK but this has no legal relevance as far as I know as we never signed any papers in the UK. Unfortunately we are heading for divorce as she committed adultery. We lived for 4 years in Germany and moved to the UK 8.5 year ago. If we decided to get divorced would we have to apply for divorce to a German court or an English court?

There is no particular problem here. It would appear that both you and your wife live and are domiciled in the UK, and will therefore come under the jurisdiction of the UK courts. As such you may petition for divorce in the UK and it is quite irrelevant that the marriage took place overseas.
